The Three-Field Approach

At the heart of anthropology lies a simple premise: that no single dimension of a human being can be understood in isolation. To understand what a person does, you must first understand who they are.

This tradition, in anthropology, is embodied by the Four-Field Approach, and is the direct inspiration to my scouting practice. This stayed with me as I began to develop my own approach to scouting football players.

The Three-Field Approach explores Character, Athletics, and Cognition together, as interconnected fields within a complete human study that always return to one question:

What kind of person is this and how does that person express itself on a football pitch?

From there, a standard evaluation follows across four dimensions; Physical, Mental, Offensive, and Defensive with the three fields serving as a quiet but constant reference point throughout. Nothing is read in isolation. Each dimension is considered in light of the human study that precedes it.

Disclaimer: Players featured in Três Campos are selected independently and do not reflect active professional engagements.

The studies published here are an expansion of my professional practice. They are a written expression of the human layer that lives underneath and informs my standard player evaluations. Naturally, these areas are designed to work together.

The Three-Field Approach, is a method that I like to apply at live matches. The studies published in Três Campos attempt to compliment standard evaluation and objective data analysis by providing a crucial subjective and observational dimension. This marriage of subjective and objective, in my scouting, is what produces the most complete picture of a player before the recruitment phase begins.

The subjects studied in Três Campos remain anonymous to allow the method to breath its own air. Each study is offered as a serious contribution to how football talent can be understood at the human level. This is for scouts, analysts, fans, and any engaged observer of the beautiful game.

Viva Portugal e um grande abraço para si.
