The home side in red are playing at a high tempo, enjoying possession and making it difficult for the away team to exit their own half. The press is well-timed from the forwards, the chances are coming, and the cold north-westerly wind does nothing to calm the intensity of a Sunday afternoon in the first division.

Our subject is substituted.

With his left hand he receives a small towel, throws is to the side, then reaches and grabs the top of the seat behind him. His right hand coils,  his body flexes and he throws a punch at the back of the chair with full force, full intent. Then, somewhere in mid-flight, it slows. What would have broken the seat becomes a half-punch. Controlled. Suppressed. The chair, bolted to the ground, bounces back into place.

He sits down. Stares into the distance. Visibly disappointed, not in the result, not in his teammates but in himself.

That single gesture tells you a lot of who this person is.
